The Mister and I woke early on Saturday, excited to visit our downtown’s first Saturday Market of the season. We have a traditional year-round farmer’s market a short drive away, but for organic local produce and people-watching we love the Saturday Market.I’ve been blessed with Starbucks gift cards, so we started our morning with Pike Place blend before we walked a few blocks to the market.
The sky was blue, the grass was green, and Greenville looked spit-shined and ready for the day.
An early-rising family was starting out on the 22-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail, but other than those folks, we didn’t see too many other people.
Possibly, this is because everyone else was already at the Market!
Lots of families with small children were buying their produce. Long lines of amiable shoppers had already formed for the homemade breads and fresh ground coffee.
Local strawberries are in, and those gems were at the top of my shopping list.
And a variety of heirloom radishes.
Wouldn’t these be fine sliced and served with a wedge of feta or butter, some mint, and pita bread?
And, the Mister had to have some English peas. We also bought a jar of local honey before we strolled back to the car, bounty in hand.
And I spent a most enjoyable afternoon, sitting in the sun.
Just shelling peas.
Do you shop at a farmer’s market?
What a gorgeous post..made me want to jump in and start picking my own veges!! How fun...love love love a farmers market and so wish we had one closer. There is one but its a bit of a drive though I do go every now and then. That one looks amazing and what a beautiful day you got to go! Does it get any better than English peas, a fresh warm tomaot and a jar of fresh honey? Yum!! Enjoy all your goodies!
ReplyDeleteHello:
ReplyDeleteWhat produce! This all looks to be well worth visiting and, judging by the crowds, is very popular indeed. People wayching, we agree, is always great fun.
When in Budapest virtually all of our meat, fruit and vegetables comes from our local market. Everything else from the CBA, a small grocer's shop, one of several, which are all state owned!!
We have a big one on our square every Saturday morning. This week DOTR and I walked with backpacks to carry everything home, since we are about 2 miles away. Usually we drive, but parking is a pain and we figured it's a good way to fit in the exercise, too. Just another place to see and be seen around here!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful setting for a farmers' market! You know, it's been a very long time since I've shopped at one - I really should make a point of supporting the local farmers' markets as much as I can this year.
ReplyDeleteYUM! Okay - I will have to go to ours on Saturday. ;)
ReplyDeleteI missed the opening of ours this past weekend but I doubt they would've had any produce...stuff has just started coming out of the ground. Next weekend I will pop down and see what's what! I have lots of cardboard cartons for the egg/chicken farmer!
ReplyDeleteyes, please! how much fun is good food from

What a lovely day! I'm a bit jealous, for living in the Boston area, our local Farmer's Market doesn't begin til late June. We also enjoy going a few minutes north to the Marblehead Farmer's Market-BEST cheese in New England!
ReplyDeleteI just LOVE shelling peas! Nothing like it...and these days they are so hard to find. I just did a post on a market in Wilmington, NC: http://bit.ly/mh1Zr9
ReplyDeleteBut yes, I go to two markets each week. We have one about two blocks from my house, on Tuesdays, then the famous Carrboro Market on Saturday, with over 90 vendors!!! I just will not buy lettuce/arugula or tomatoes anywhere else!
We do this when we head down to the coast. Stop by little vegetable stands on the side of the road. Love local farmers!
ReplyDeleteWe just got a farmer's market near us in Newport Beach, Ca and you are reminding me to support it!
ReplyDeleteUs too! One of our favorite ways to spend the afternoon. All those pictures are perfectly delightful!
