Countertop Review

This time last year I was packing up our house to prepare for our down-to-the-studs renovation in our kitchen, family room, and master bath as well as the addition of a screened porch. The family room wasn't originally part of the plan, but that's a post for another time. The kitchen was where I really had to plan and scheme, and, yes even fret, to stay in our footprint and budget and to get the function and look I wanted. I love a challenge like this, though, so despite some occasional frustration with my client (aka me! ), I enjoyed the process. A key "want" of mine was honed marble countertops. There are dozens--maybe hundreds--of blog posts, articles, and showroom sites that compare various types of countertop materials and their pros and cons. I read most of them and took notes from a lot of them in the months leading up to our start date. One of the most helpful things was visiting a sweet friend's kitchen, where I was able to ask questions about cleaning, a

An Entertaining History Lesson for the 4th of July

Happy Fourth of July! Here are a few random shots from around the T&C House, along with an entertaining history lesson from one of our national treasures!

The above excerpt is from the episode "Andy Discovers America," which originally aired March 4, 1963. I have enjoyed so many of them, but few can compare with the classic parenting tale of "Opie, the Birdman."

If you are a fan of The Andy Griffith Show, tell me which is your favorite episode!

  1. Love it, looks great! I think my favorite episode is when Ernest T. wants to marry the daughter of the Darlings and Andy figures out how to distract him. DOTR's favorite is when Barney gets the solo in the chorus and they discover he can't sing, so they mute his mic and have the guy with the huge voice sing behind the curtain. And Barney somehow thinks he's really singing. Cracks him up every time.

  2. What a wonderful post for the 4th of July. My husband was glued to my computer screen while I had the Andy clip playing. Love how your house is decorated for the holiday. I would swear that the garland across your mantle is the same one I had strung across my middle child's Americana nursery when he was born. Forgot all about having that!

    1. Kelly, I have had that garland a lonnnng time, I'm guessing at least 17 years. I used to use it in our boys' room, and then it was packed away with some patriotic decorations. This is the first year I've used it on the mantle, and I kind of like the simplicity of it. Your house looked great for the holiday, too, and I love your bicycle!

  3. Your house is gorgeous! Happy belated 4th of July! I remember watching reruns of "The Andy Griffith Show" as kids. Loved the "Citizen's Arrest!" episode, as well as the one where Barney sings to Juanita over the phone and Andy sneaks up behind him. He will be missed!

  4. oh i how i love, love, love that show! i think ive seen each episode at least 3 times. my fav episodes have to be the pickle story, the haunted house, and when barney buys the fortune telling stuff from the police auction! hysterical! makes me laugh everytime! house looks wonderful!!! hope yall had a great 4th!
